We have had a wonderful first days of summer, as we work on finishing up our projects.
Tomorrow our class, along with some of the other grade 1/2 and grade 3 classes, will be making some sandwiches to donate to the Mustard Seed. If any of you are available to volunteer to help out with this from 10:00 - 10:30 please email me at <gasoulliere@cbe.ab.ca>.
Next Tuesday is Movie and Pyjama Day, and next Wednesday is Sports Day and the last day of school. If you are planning on your child not attending the last day or days of school please let myself and the office know.

Hello families and friends,
We have had a very busy past week wrapping up some of the projects that we have been working on. We are continuing to work hard on finishing these up in preparation for the end of the year. We are starting to get our stories that we have been working on onto IRIS, and we also made videos last Thursday about ourselves for our next year's teacher. Go check it out here and see what your child said. The username and password are the same that your child uses at school. We also had a presentation this morning from the Calgary Public Library about their summer reading program. Ask your child about this.
As we are getting closer to the last day of school, we will be starting to send home some of the things that the students have done throughout the year. To help facilitate this it is recommended that you send an extra bag (like a grocery bag) with them to carry the things in so that their backpack does not become overloaded.
Next Tuesday, June 27th, will be Pyjama and Movie Day. Next Wednesday, June 28th, is Sports Day in the morning.

Hello families and friends,
It has been a very busy week! We had a wonderful day at the zoo on Monday, and we learned a lot about the bears that live in Canada. The students have been working hard through the week on writing about things they learned at the zoo, solving math problems, and finishing up the stories that we have been working on. We also had a soccer residency, and got to do some more coding work with Ms. Handelsman. We will be continuing to work hard on finishing up our projects that we have been working on for the last couple weeks of school.
To assist with end of the year organizing and inventory, we are asking that all library and home reading books be returned next Monday, June 12th. If home reading books have been lost, the school is asking for $5 to replace them so that we can ensure there are enough books for all students. Thank you for your assistance in this.

Hello families and friends,
We have been continuing to work on our animal research with our buddies in Mrs. Sloane's class, and will be looking at finishing these up in the coming week. We have also been working on illustrating and typing up our stories. In math, we have been continuing to work on representing double-digit numbers, and strategies for adding and subtracting double-digit numbers.
Thank you to everyone who came out to the fish release yesterday! It was a beautiful day, and the kids had a lot of fun.

Your hair can be as crazy as you like! On Thursday, we will be having a literacy night. Teachers will be presenting games, similar to our math night earlier this year. It will be from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.

Hello families and friends,
Today we took a visit to the Learning Commons to switch out our books. After that we worked on using our mental math strategies to solve a bunch of addition and subtraction questions. Then we continued work on our stories, doing the illustrations. We have been starting to work on putting these stories onto the iPads using Pages. Then we finished off our morning with some Read to Self. In the afternoon, we continued working with our buddies on our animal research. Most of the groups are finishing up putting their books together, and we will be putting the finishing touches on them next week. After that we went to gym for some more drum fit. We finished off our day with working on comparing the animals that we have been researching to leopard geckos. In the comments below, post one thing that is different between your animal and a leopard gecko, or one thing that is the same (or similar).
A reminder that tomorrow is our trout release! I hope to see you all there.

After that we worked on our stories some more, and practiced our Read to Self and Read to Someone. Then in math we practiced using expanded form. Ask your child about this. In the afternoon we worked with our buddies on finishing up our animal research. Then we continued Drum Fit in gym. After that we went outside to look at the growth that has happened on our trees outside, and measured how long our buds have grown. Ask your child what they learned from this. Then we spent the last part of our day looking at some tree clippings that Mr. Soulliere brought in from his house. What did you notice about the branches and leaves? Post in the comments below.

Then we had our mental math warmup and worked on some word problems. In the afternoon we continued working with our buddies on our animal research. Some of the groups are getting close to finish up their books! Then we went to drum fit with Mrs. Grummett and Ms. Collins' classes. After that we started working on a booklet to see what we could remember about our work on Buoyancy and Boats last week. We finished off our day working on an origami water lily.
Field trip forms for the zoo will be going home at some point this week. Please have them filled out completely and returned by Monday, May 29th. This Wednesday is Fun Lunch. It is also a short week this week and next. Friday is a PD day, and Monday is a holiday.

Hello families and friends,
Yesterday we had a wonderful in-class field trip with Teachers' Pet, learning about Buoyancy and Boats. Ask your child what they learned. We have also been continuing work on our reading and writing skills, and working hard at our animal research with our buddies in Mrs. Sloane's class. The students have also been learning how to do origami, and are really enjoying it! So far we have made a dog, a jumping frog, two types of boats, and are working on a secret one now. This morning we also had a special visit from one of the grade 4 classes at Dr. George Stanley. They have been working on some stories about healthy living, and they wanted to share them with us. Ask your child what their buddy's story was about and what they learned from it. Afterwards we spent some time sharing our stories that we have been working on with them, and then did some buddy reading.

Today was a nice quiet day for us. We spent some time working on our Read to Self and Read to Someone skills. Then we did some writing about a goal that we have for what we would like to do before the end of the year. Ask your child what their goal is. In gym we did a group run to the windmill. As the weather is getting warmer we will likely be having more outdoor gym days. Please make sure that your child is wearing proper footwear for running and doing activities outside. At the end of the day we worked on our pictograph work with our partners.
Next Wednesday is our in-school field trip on Boats and Buoyancy. I am still looking for one volunteer to help out with this. Please email me at <gasoulliere@cbe.ab.ca> if you are able to make it. They are asking for volunteers to arrive at around 12:45 to be briefed on what your duties will be, and it will go right to the end of the day.

Happy Arbour Day! Yesterday we worked hard on all of our art to get it finished up, and today was a day full of Arbour Day celebrations. Our school's new tree has been planted out front near the bike racks. I hope that you are all able to make it tonight to see it and all of the wonderful work that the students, in our class and throughout the school, have been doing around Arbour Day. Doors open at 6:00.

We had a great performance of our Music Monday assembly yesterday! The students had worked really hard on all the songs and they sounded terrific. Thank you to everyone who was able to make it out to watch. In the afternoon we started work on a tree mural that will be on display for Arbour Day on Thursday. Today we continued working on this in the morning. We also worked on our group pictographs that we had started up last week. In the afternoon we worked with Ms. Ellison on another art project for Arbour Day. Ask your child about this. We will be continuing and finishing both of these art projects tomorrow.
Tomorrow is Hats on for Mental Health Day. Students are encouraged to wear their hats.
Thursday is our Arbour Day celebration. The students will have an opportunity to tour around the school during the day to see all of the work that the rest of the school has been working on. In the evening, students are encouraged to come with their parents to show and share what they have created and seen. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.

Hello families and friends,
Today we continued to work on our creature stories that we had started up before spring break. We got into buddies and gave some more feedback on what they have written so far to start working on revising. Then we went to the Learning Commons to switch out our books. After that we joined Mrs. Sloane and Ms. Thomas' classes for music to practice our songs for the assembly. Then we continued working on data collection and making pictographs. Ask your child about what they did. In the afternoon we worked on our buddy animal research before we joined up with Mrs. Sloane and Ms. Thomas' classes again to do a run-through of the assembly with our MCs as well.
On Monday, we will be hosting the Music Monday assembly. We are planning to begin promptly at 10:15, and calling students down at 10:00. Parents are welcome to come and watch the performance.
We have also been watching the buds growing on the trees, and the students have made some predictions about how many leaves will grow from the bud they are observing and how long they will grow.
Update: On Friday, May 26th, we will be releasing our school's Rainbow Trout at Mt. Lorette Ponds.

Ask your child what they said. In the comments below, post your answer. After that we joined Mrs. Sloane's class for music to practice our songs that we will be singing for the assembly on Music Monday. This is on Monday, May 1st, just one week away. Please help your child practice these songs; a link to each of the songs can be found on the post from April 18th. We all got a booklet today with the words to help us with practicing. After music class we worked on finishing up our music writing and then started a music word search for word work. We finished the morning with Read to Someone. In the afternoon we started with some Read to Self before we joined our buddies to continue our animal research. After that we joined Ms. Thomas' class for music to practice our assembly songs. We finished our morning with our words of the week. They are "vein", "blade", "midrib", "stem", and "chlorophyll" for all students. In the comments below, post a sentence about how one of these words relates to a leaf. In the afternoon we went to music again, then joined our buddies in Mrs. Sloane's class to work on our animal research. Ask your child what they have learned about their animal. Then we did some reading before going to gym to practice our dance performance.
Tomorrow afternoon, from 2:10-2:45, our class will be performing the dance we have been working on with Mrs. Redwood and Mrs. Stols' classes. Parents are welcome to come and watch this. No tickets are required.
Tomorrow is also Picture Day, and Fun Lunch.

Hello families and friends,
Yesterday we read the book The Alphabet Tree by Leo Lionni, a book about how letters come together to make words, and words to make sentences. We practiced some Making Words with the letters from Easter Hunt to go with this. We have also been continuing work on our stories about the creatures that we created. Today we worked with a partner to work on revising the beginning of our stories. Ask your child what their story is about. Continuing our work with our buddies in Mrs. Sloane's class, most of the groups are finishing up their research on their animal. In the comments below, write one difference between your animal and leopard geckos. In gym, we have been continuing our dance residency with Mr. Ajay.
Next Wednesday, we will be having our performance for dance from 2:10 - 2:45. Parents are welcome to come and watch the performance. Next Wednesday is also Fun Lunch, and Picture Day.
If anyone is interested in volunteering for either of our upcoming events, the Boats and Buoyancy in-school field trip with Teacher's Pet on the afternoon of May 10th, or the trip to the zoo for the day of June 5th, please email me and let me know at <gasoulliere@cbe.ab.ca>. We are able to accommodate for up to 2 more volunteers for the zoo trip, as they limit how many adults are included in the program package. Volunteer forms for Teacher's Pet will be going home next week, and forms for the zoo trip will be going home in May.
One of our students has misplaced their Beanie Boo at some point today. If you could please check your child's backpack to make sure that it did not end up in there by accident that would be appreciated. As the weather warms up, another reminder to make sure that your child's belongings are labelled with their name or initials to help with locating who they belong to when they inevitably get to the lost and found, as many students take off coats, mitts, hats, etc. during recess time and forget about them.
For our Music Monday assembly we will be singing Sing It Together, and We Are One. We may also be singing Sing Sing and Tomorrow is Coming. If you can be practicing these songs at home with your child it would be much appreciated.

Yesterday we read the book The Alphabet Tree by Leo Lionni, a book about how letters come together to make words, and words to make sentences. We practiced some Making Words with the letters from Easter Hunt to go with this. We have also been continuing work on our stories about the creatures that we created. Today we worked with a partner to work on revising the beginning of our stories. Ask your child what their story is about. Continuing our work with our buddies in Mrs. Sloane's class, most of the groups are finishing up their research on their animal. In the comments below, write one difference between your animal and leopard geckos. In gym, we have been continuing our dance residency with Mr. Ajay.
Next Wednesday, we will be having our performance for dance from 2:10 - 2:45. Parents are welcome to come and watch the performance. Next Wednesday is also Fun Lunch, and Picture Day.
If anyone is interested in volunteering for either of our upcoming events, the Boats and Buoyancy in-school field trip with Teacher's Pet on the afternoon of May 10th, or the trip to the zoo for the day of June 5th, please email me and let me know at <gasoulliere@cbe.ab.ca>. We are able to accommodate for up to 2 more volunteers for the zoo trip, as they limit how many adults are included in the program package. Volunteer forms for Teacher's Pet will be going home next week, and forms for the zoo trip will be going home in May.
One of our students has misplaced their Beanie Boo at some point today. If you could please check your child's backpack to make sure that it did not end up in there by accident that would be appreciated. As the weather warms up, another reminder to make sure that your child's belongings are labelled with their name or initials to help with locating who they belong to when they inevitably get to the lost and found, as many students take off coats, mitts, hats, etc. during recess time and forget about them.

Hello families and friends,
Today we started off our day with some Daily 5 work; the students are able to choose from Read to Self, Read to Someone, Free Writing, and Word Games, while I work in small groups with students. We did two rounds of this. This is a great way for the students to show off their independent working skills and that they can be responsible for their learning. After that we worked in our small groups on our look at Alberta. We have been learning about the natural resources and geography. Ask your child what they have learned so far. In the afternoon we continued our buddy research with Mrs. Sloane's class. Some of the groups are finishing up their research and are ready to move on to putting it into writing. We also went outside to look at the trees. Some of the buds are starting to open up! Then we did some bark rubbing with coloured pencils and crayons. We finished off our day with our dance residency and doing our calendar.
Thank you to everyone who returned the permission form for our Boats and Buoyancy in-school field trip. Please make sure that these are all returned by Friday, April 21st.

In the mornings we have been continuing to practice our Read to Self and Read to Someone skills. We also finished working on writing the first two parts of our stories about us and our creatures; the beginning and introducing our problem. Next week we will work on giving feedback and doing some revising work on what we have written so far. Through our read-alouds this week, we have been focusing on stories that focus on the topics of teamwork, empathy, and seeing things from someone else's perspective. Ask your child what they have learned about this. Today we also had one of our spelling tests from our word wall words. The students did very well with this. In gym we have been having our dance residency. Ask your child what they've learned.
Permission forms have gone home for our in-school field trip with Teacher's Pet. This will be in the afternoon on May 10th. If anyone is available that afternoon to volunteer and help out with this you can email me at <gasoulliere@cbe.ab.ca> and I will send home a form.

We learned that they introduce our main character, our setting, and set up for the problem. Then we started using this to write the introduction to the story we will be writing about us and our creatures that we created before the break. In math, we started looking at data collecting and learned more about our classmates to practice collecting and recording information. We have also started making our own temperature graphs for April. This afternoon, we met up with our grade 3 buddies in Mrs. Sloane's class to start some animal research. We will be continuing this each day over the next few weeks.

Today we worked hard on getting ready for Student Led Conferences tonight and tomorrow morning. The students have lots of things that they are ready and eager to share with you. Feel free to come and spend some time before and after the time that you have booked with me to go through their work and get them to explain some of the things that we have been doing in class. There will also be a few problems and challenges for you to work on with them for our "alien math", so you can see how it works.

Hello families and friends,
Happy first days of spring! Yesterday, we started off today with some "spring cleaning", getting our bins and books organized and ready for tomorrow and Thursday. We have worked on some writing about our favourite parts of spring, and today did a picture prompt of a leprechaun to write about. Our words of the week for this week are "spring", "leaf", "every", "see", and "bud" for all students. We have been continuing to work on rebuilding our stamina for Read to Self and Read to Someone, and are working on getting a video of us reading onto IRIS. In math, we have been continuing to work on our "alien math", and doing word problems. We are also working on finishing up some of the projects that we have been working on for the past couple weeks to be ready for Student Led Conferences.
A reminder that Student Led Conferences are tomorrow evening and Thursday morning. There are still a lot of times available, so if you have not signed up yet please do so. This can be done through My CBE Account. Friday is a PD Day, so there is no school for students. Next week is also Spring Break, and the following Monday is a holiday. Classes will resume on Tuesday, April 4th.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! We have been continuing our catch up work, getting some art and writing finished up before next week. We also continued working on our problem solving skills in math using our "alien math". Yesterday we started working in groups again on some research on a new animal, rainbow trout. We will be working on this next week to see how we can use the research skills we learned and to compare what we learn to our leopard gecko information. Today was our last day of this round of Friday Clubs.
A reminder that next Wednesday evening and Thursday morning are Student Led Conferences. Booking for this is available through My CBE Account. Because of Student Led Conferences, next week will be a short week; the students only have school on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The following week is also Spring Break. This morning we watched a video on why we lose control. Then we did a written reflection on what we heard and discussed. We have been continuing to work on our problem solving skills with our "alien math". Ask your child what they have been working on. Yesterday we got the laptops and worked on adding some things into IRIS. We have also spent some time getting caught up on some of the larger work pieces that we have started lately in an effort to get those finished up before Spring Break.
Booking for Student Led Conferences is open now. They are next Wednesday, March 22nd, in the evening and Thursday, March 23rd, in the morning.

Hello families and friends,
Our words of the week for this week are "up", "upon", "into", and "away" for grade ones, and "down", "around", "together", and "here" for grade twos. Yesterday, Mrs. Tuff talked with our class about how the grade 1 and 2 students are going to get to design the back cover of this year's school yearbook. Each student will get to do a drawing, and they will all be put on display for the school to vote on. To practice for what a good drawing should look like, we read the story "Hurray for You! A Celebration of You-ness" and we each drew a picture of something that makes us who we are. Then we looked at each of the pictures and described things that made a picture good, or things that were done well, and the things that took away from a picture, or made it not as nice looking. They had some great observations. What is one thing that makes for a good picture? This is something that we will be working on in our pictures to go with our writing as well. In math, we have been continuing work on our "alien math". Ask your child about this.
This week, our lunchroom system has changed. The grade 1 and 2 students will now be eating their lunches all together in the hub for the first part of the lunch hour and then going outside for recess afterwards.
On the evening of Wednesday, March 22nd, and the afternoon of Thursday, March 23rd, will be Student Led Conferences. Booking for this will be opening up soon through My CBE Account. Friday, March 24th, is a PD Day so there is no school for students. The following week is Spring Break.

We had a busy week with swimming every afternoon this week. In the mornings we have been continuing to work on our reading skills with Read to Self and Read to Someone. Our words of the week for this week were "you're", "don't", "can't", and "there" for grade twos, and "just", "saw", "this", and "finish" for grade ones. We also continued working on describing our creatures, asking questions with a partner to get some extra ideas out. In math, we have continued our "alien math" work, spent some time on Mathletics, and did our choice math time.
A reminder to keep tracking your reading at home! There are a few students that haven't brought back their sheet yet to get any hockey cards. Remember, for every 100 minutes you read at home, you will earn a Calgary Flames hockey card!

Today was our first day of swimming! We will be going all week for the afternoon, so please help your child to remember their swimming gear each day. Also, if your child has long hair, please make sure that it is tied back so that it stays out of their face as they are swimming. There was a bit of a delay with the bus today, but the pool was able to accommodate us so we still got our full time.

We have been continuing to work on our Read to Self and Read to Someone skills this week. The students also started creating their own creatures for a writing project that we will be starting. They designed their creature, and then worked on adding some descriptive adjectives and information about it today. Ask your child some different questions about their creature to help them come up with those details. This will make their work with it next week easier. We have also started working on "alien math". We imagined that we went on a spaceship, and crashed on a moon near Jupiter. There we encountered some weird aliens, and started investigating their numbers. The students had a lot of good conversations while they were trying to figure it out. Ask your child what they have learned. We have also been working on finishing up our research into leopard geckos.
A reminder that next week we will be going swimming each afternoon. Please help your child to remember their swimsuit and towel, and to bring an extra bag to put their wet things into afterwards so they don't get their backpack all wet. Volunteers are free to just meet us at the swimming pool.

Welcome back! I hope that you all had a good long weekend. We started off our day with sharing and writing about our weekends. We also read the story "exclamation mark" by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, and the students were challenged to include at least one exclamation mark in their writing. When would you use an exclamation mark, and post one sentence that uses one in the comments below. After that we did a special Making Words using the letters in the words "One Hundred Days" for our hundredth day of school. We also practiced our Read to Self and Read to Someone skills. In the afternoon we started with our mental math warmup, and then worked on showing as many ways as we can to represent the number 100. Then we made some cool 100th day of school glasses, and continued some work on our fractal tree scratch art.
Tomorrow is Pink Shirt Day! Pink Shirt Day was started to put a stop to bullying and promote kindness. Show your support by wearing your pink!
Next week we will be going swimming from Monday to Thursday. If you have not sent in your child's permission forms for this please do so by this Thursday, February 23rd. Happy Valentine's Day! For word work this week we have introduced our words of the week. They are "now", "long", "ever", and "how" for grade ones, and "light", "but", "right", and "goes" for grade twos. Then today we did another Making Words with the letters 'o', 'u', 'b', 'd', 'l', 'n', 't', and 'w'. What is the longest word you can make using these letters? Post your word in the comments below. We also did some work on Mathletics and Raz-Kids. A reminder that these websites are available through the school website, and are a great resource for books and math activities that are at an appropriate level for your child. We continued working on our art for Arbour Day, scratching our fractal tree designs into the paint and adding some ripped white paper at the bottom for snow. They have turned out really well! The students got to work on a colour-by-number activity with addition and subtraction this afternoon. In gym, we have been learning about and using maps to find different things around our school-grounds.
A reminder that tomorrow is our Winter Sports Day. Our class will be going out in the morning for the festivities, so please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for being outside during the early day temperatures. It is also Fun Lunch.
This weekend is a VERY long weekend for the students; Thursday and Friday are Teachers' Convention, and Monday is Family Day.

Happy Valentine's Day! For word work this week we have introduced our words of the week. They are "now", "long", "ever", and "how" for grade ones, and "light", "but", "right", and "goes" for grade twos. Then today we did another Making Words with the letters 'o', 'u', 'b', 'd', 'l', 'n', 't', and 'w'. What is the longest word you can make using these letters? Post your word in the comments below. We also did some work on Mathletics and Raz-Kids. A reminder that these websites are available through the school website, and are a great resource for books and math activities that are at an appropriate level for your child. Hello families and friends,
Today we continued practicing our Read to Self skills, and got our stamina back up to 14 minutes. Then we practiced our Read to Someone as well. We did really well with this. We also added the next step to our art that we began yesterday, painting over the pastels with black paint. Next week we can start scratching out our trees designs. Then we watched a Magic School Bus video on food chains. After that we had fitness stations in gym, then went off to our Friday Clubs. Ask your child what they did today.
Next week is a short but busy week. There is no school for students on Thursday or Friday for Teachers' Convention. Wednesday is going to be our Winter Sports Day. Our class will be participating in the morning. That day is also Fun Lunch. And Tuesday is Valentine's Day. For this, it is recommended that your child just sign the cards to hand out to the other students and not put who they are for on each one. As well, instead of sending in treats for the whole class, you may send in a special treat for just your child. This will help to alleviate some of the issues that arise around dietary restrictions and allergies. As always though, nothing with peanuts, as there are some students in the school with very severe allergies.
Next Monday and Tuesday, Mrs. Quilley is planning on taking the students outside for gym. Please remember to make sure your child is dressing appropriately for the weather.

Hello families and friends,
Today we started our day by collecting our snow for our insulator competition! There were a wide a variety of different creations.
Today we started our day by collecting our snow for our insulator competition! There were a wide a variety of different creations.
Over the day we watched as the snow melted away until in the afternoon most of them had lost all of their snow. Only a few remained with any left.
Finally, by the end of the day as the students were getting ready, we were down to just two left. It was not long after they were dismissed that there was only one remaining with any snow left in it.
Congratulations to JR for constructing our most effective insulator! What do you think made this insulator work better than the other ones? Post your answer in the comments below.
We have been continuing to practice our reading skills. This morning we took some time to review what our good Read to Self looks like. We will be working on rebuilding our reading stamina; by the end of the morning we were able to last for 10 minutes of continuous, uninterrupted reading as a class, quite a bit shorter than our stamina of 20 minutes that we had built up to in October.
In our word work we have worked on the /ou/, /ow/ sound. Then we did a guided drawing of an owl outside to go with our words.
In math we have been continuing to work on our representation skills using the base-10 blocks to show double digit numbers. Yesterday we also learned a new way to represent larger numbers, expanded form. Ask your child about this. This work is building towards the work that we will be doing looking at understanding place value.
We have continued working on our research into leopard geckos and building our research skills. We have learned about being "active readers", checking to make sure that what you are reading makes sense not only in terms of what the sentence is saying but also making sure it fits with what you are reading about; if you are researching leopard geckos and it says they like to spend time in trees, that does not fit with what we know about where they live, so it is probably not the correct information. We also learned that even some really good websites, like National Geographic Kids, may not have good information for what we need depending on the animal we are looking for. Finally, we watched a video on a leopard gecko's tail after it had dropped to see how it is used as a defence mechanism.
This afternoon we started working on an art project to go with our work for Arbour Day. We are combining our fractal art that we learned earlier this year with the scratch art technique. Ask your child what we did today for it.
I am happy to see that people have been bringing in their sheets with lots of reading time recorded! Remember, for every 100 minutes that the student reads at home they earn a hockey card. One student earned themselves 7 today for all the reading that they have done!

Today we started with practicing our Read to Self and Read to Someone skills. Then we did our words of the week. They are "say", "jump", "ran", and "play" for grade ones, and "read", "clean", "know", and "buy" for grade twos. After that we worked on some writing about our weekends. In the afternoon we did our mental math warmup, and then practiced our finger counting technique for showing numbers up to 99 "chisanbop". Then we did an "indoor recess" from GoNoodle for our gym time today. After that we learned another new version of one of our math games, Subtraction Face-Off. Ask your child about this. We finished our day by finishing building our insulators for our experiment/competition tomorrow.
I heard that the students have done a lot of reading so far for our Reading...Give it a Shot! program. Make sure that you are marking off each day how long you read for. After 100 minutes, bring the sheet in to get a Calgary Flames hockey card!
For those that indicated they will be available to volunteer for swimming, I will start sending the forms for that home tomorrow. I will send home one copy, but if both parents/guardians are available to come either make a photocopy or email me and I will send home a second copy. Today we started with learning about "king ed". This is the 'e' at the end of words that tells the other vowels to "say their name" (e.g. make). After that the group did their Read to Someone and looked for these types of words in the books they read together to make a list in their writing books. After that we practiced our Read to Self. We finished off our morning with starting to build our insulators. In the afternoon, we did our mental math warmup, then we had our Choice Math time. Then we read the story Mister Once-upon-a-time, and talked about the story elements of Character, Setting, Problem, and Solution. What was your favourite part of the story? We finished our day continuing our skipping skills in gym and then going to music. Ask your child what we did today.
Swimming permission forms have gone home today. Please fill these out in full and return as soon as possible. If you are available to volunteer on any of the days, please mark that off at the bottom of the first sheet and return that slip to me with the other forms and I will send home a volunteer acknowledgement of risk.
Don't forget to fill out each day how long your child reads for on the Reading...Give it a Shot! tracking sheet. The goal is to read for 100 minutes. For every 100 minutes they read at home, they will earn a Calgary Flames hockey card!

Today we started with Making Words using the letters 'a', 'e', 'i', 'g', 'm', 'r', 's', and 't'. We each had a tile for each of these letters and used them to make as many words as we can. Hello families and friends,
We have been continuing to work on our literacy skills in the mornings. We wrote about our weekends and had author's chair, practicing giving feedback by giving one compliment, one critique, and asking one question about their writing. This morning we also continued work on our partner stories. These are coming along really well and some are close to finishing theirs up. Our words of the week for this week are "like", "live", "take", and "ride" for grade ones, and "have", "give", "where", and "does" for grade twos. We also worked on the /sh/ and /zh/ sounds. In the comments below, post a sentence that includes each of these two sounds. In math, we continued our work on place value with the base ten blocks. Then we learned a new version of a game, double-digit face-off. Today we practiced our addition and subtraction skills. The students were allowed to use a number line and/or hundred chart to help them with this. We also continued our research into leopard geckos. In gym, we started working on skipping skills.
Tomorrow, we will be starting the Reading...Give it a Shot program, in partnership with the Calgary Flames. Each student will get a tracking sheet that will go home with them. Each day, please record on the calendar how many minutes that your child reads at home. After 100 minutes of combined reading, they will earn a Calgary Flames hockey card! There are 24 cards in all to collect.
Tomorrow is also Winter Walk Day. In the afternoon, the whole school will be taking time to walk down to the windmill and back. Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the cold weather!
As snow is no longer in the forecast for this week, we will be continuing to collect materials for building our insulators for our experiment. If you have any spare materials that you can donate (e.g. cardboard, cloth/fabrics, feathers, etc.) they would be much appreciated.

Hello families and friends,
We have been continuing to work on our partner stories, and will soon be putting them together into books using the iPads. Yesterday we also played a round of sight word bingo using all of the words off of our word wall. In math, we started some work with the base-10 blocks. Some numbers were put on the board and the students had to make the number using as few blocks as possible. Then today we introduced two new pieces for our daily math work: problem of the week, and numbers of the day. Each week there will be a new problem posted on the board, and each day there will be two new different numbers posted on the board. These are for the students to work on if they finish their mental math warmup before the time is up, or if they have finished the day's work early. We have also been beginning working on some research skills, doing a group research project on Lola.
Following with our experiment with insulators last week, we will be having a little competition. The students planned and designed what they think will be the best insulator. While we are waiting for our next snow so that we can have some fresh material to work with, we will be working on building our insulators. We will be looking for some extra material to work with; if you are able to spare any extra cardboard, cloth, yarn, etc. for our use that would be much appreciated.
While the weather has been warming up, the lost and found will soon start to fill up as well. To help with locating the winter gear that will inevitably be lost, a reminder to label the clothing with your child's name or initials.
This Friday, the kindergarten classes will be hosting our Chinese New Year assembly. This morning, we watched a video and read a book that gave some information about the holiday and the celebrations. For the assembly on Friday, all students are encouraged to wear red.

We will be working afterwards on putting them together electronically. After that we practiced our reading skills with some of the group on Read to Self and the rest on Read to Someone, switching halfway through. Then we added our new words of the week. They are "why", "pick", "new", and "help" for grade ones, and "which", "best", "little", and "with" for grade twos. In the afternoon we started with a look at the things we had come up with last week that we know about Lola and what her needs are. Then we came up with some questions that we want to learn about her, or leopard geckos. We will be working on this for the next few weeks to develop our research skills for when we get started on our own animals. Then we talked a little about Arbor Day, as our school is part of the celebration this year, and watched the movie The Lorax. The students had lots of great ideas and questions about why trees are important. In gym, we continued our obstacle course.
Report cards have gone home today. Please sign the envelope and return it to me so that it can be used again for the report card at the end of the year.

Hello families and friends,
Today we started our day with writing about our weekends. We have really been working on adding more details into our ideas, using the word wall to help with our spelling, and remembering to put a period at the end of our work. Then after snack we got into groups and collected some snow in cups. Throughout the day we made some observations about what was happening in our cups and made labelled diagrams of what we saw. Ask your child what happened with their snow. Then in word work we did our words of the week. To fit in with our work on hot and cold temperatures, our words this week are "freeze", "melt", "water", "insulate", and "temperature". After that we worked on our Read to Self and Read to Someone skills.
In the afternoon we started with our first day of having the students do the afternoon read-aloud. We will be having a different student do this each day from Monday to Thursday so that everyone has an opportunity to read a book to the class. This should be a book that the student has read before, and is comfortable reading independently in front of the group. Then we continued looking at subtraction with a couple problems, making sure to draw out what we were doing to get our answers. In gym we started an obstacle course. Ask your child about this. We ended our day talking about what happened with the snow we had collected and some ideas for different experiments we could try.
Please make sure that your child's swimming form is returned by tomorrow. This needs to be sent to the pool in preparation for when we go swimming at the end of February so that the instructors will know which group to place each student in.

Hello families and friends,
We started off our day today writing about our holidays. Then we did some Read to Self. Then we did Read to Someone. After that we did our words of the week. They are "once", "who", "are", and "about" for grade ones, and "that", "should", "could", and "would" for grade twos. After lunch we did some missing patterns. Ask your child about this. Then we did some writing about responsibilities. We finished off our day with gym and music.
Forms for swimming are going home today. They are due back by Monday, January 16th.
