Today we started our day by collecting our snow for our insulator competition! There were a wide a variety of different creations.
Over the day we watched as the snow melted away until in the afternoon most of them had lost all of their snow. Only a few remained with any left.
Finally, by the end of the day as the students were getting ready, we were down to just two left. It was not long after they were dismissed that there was only one remaining with any snow left in it.

We have been continuing to practice our reading skills. This morning we took some time to review what our good Read to Self looks like. We will be working on rebuilding our reading stamina; by the end of the morning we were able to last for 10 minutes of continuous, uninterrupted reading as a class, quite a bit shorter than our stamina of 20 minutes that we had built up to in October.
In our word work we have worked on the /ou/, /ow/ sound. Then we did a guided drawing of an owl outside to go with our words.
In math we have been continuing to work on our representation skills using the base-10 blocks to show double digit numbers. Yesterday we also learned a new way to represent larger numbers, expanded form. Ask your child about this. This work is building towards the work that we will be doing looking at understanding place value.
We have continued working on our research into leopard geckos and building our research skills. We have learned about being "active readers", checking to make sure that what you are reading makes sense not only in terms of what the sentence is saying but also making sure it fits with what you are reading about; if you are researching leopard geckos and it says they like to spend time in trees, that does not fit with what we know about where they live, so it is probably not the correct information. We also learned that even some really good websites, like National Geographic Kids, may not have good information for what we need depending on the animal we are looking for. Finally, we watched a video on a leopard gecko's tail after it had dropped to see how it is used as a defence mechanism.
This afternoon we started working on an art project to go with our work for Arbour Day. We are combining our fractal art that we learned earlier this year with the scratch art technique. Ask your child what we did today for it.
I am happy to see that people have been bringing in their sheets with lots of reading time recorded! Remember, for every 100 minutes that the student reads at home they earn a hockey card. One student earned themselves 7 today for all the reading that they have done!
