Hello families and friends,
We have been continuing to work on our literacy skills in the mornings. We wrote about our weekends and had author's chair, practicing giving feedback by giving one compliment, one critique, and asking one question about their writing. This morning we also continued work on our partner stories. These are coming along really well and some are close to finishing theirs up. Our words of the week for this week are "like", "live", "take", and "ride" for grade ones, and "have", "give", "where", and "does" for grade twos. We also worked on the /sh/ and /zh/ sounds. In the comments below, post a sentence that includes each of these two sounds. In math, we continued our work on place value with the base ten blocks. Then we learned a new version of a game, double-digit face-off. Today we practiced our addition and subtraction skills. The students were allowed to use a number line and/or hundred chart to help them with this. We also continued our research into leopard geckos. In gym, we started working on skipping skills.
Tomorrow, we will be starting the Reading...Give it a Shot program, in partnership with the Calgary Flames. Each student will get a tracking sheet that will go home with them. Each day, please record on the calendar how many minutes that your child reads at home. After 100 minutes of combined reading, they will earn a Calgary Flames hockey card! There are 24 cards in all to collect.
Tomorrow is also Winter Walk Day. In the afternoon, the whole school will be taking time to walk down to the windmill and back. Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the cold weather!
As snow is no longer in the forecast for this week, we will be continuing to collect materials for building our insulators for our experiment. If you have any spare materials that you can donate (e.g. cardboard, cloth/fabrics, feathers, etc.) they would be much appreciated.

Hello families and friends,
We have been continuing to work on our partner stories, and will soon be putting them together into books using the iPads. Yesterday we also played a round of sight word bingo using all of the words off of our word wall. In math, we started some work with the base-10 blocks. Some numbers were put on the board and the students had to make the number using as few blocks as possible. Then today we introduced two new pieces for our daily math work: problem of the week, and numbers of the day. Each week there will be a new problem posted on the board, and each day there will be two new different numbers posted on the board. These are for the students to work on if they finish their mental math warmup before the time is up, or if they have finished the day's work early. We have also been beginning working on some research skills, doing a group research project on Lola.
Following with our experiment with insulators last week, we will be having a little competition. The students planned and designed what they think will be the best insulator. While we are waiting for our next snow so that we can have some fresh material to work with, we will be working on building our insulators. We will be looking for some extra material to work with; if you are able to spare any extra cardboard, cloth, yarn, etc. for our use that would be much appreciated.
While the weather has been warming up, the lost and found will soon start to fill up as well. To help with locating the winter gear that will inevitably be lost, a reminder to label the clothing with your child's name or initials.
This Friday, the kindergarten classes will be hosting our Chinese New Year assembly. This morning, we watched a video and read a book that gave some information about the holiday and the celebrations. For the assembly on Friday, all students are encouraged to wear red.

We started off our day today working on our partner stories. These are coming along really well, and most of the groups are starting to illustrate them. We will be working afterwards on putting them together electronically. After that we practiced our reading skills with some of the group on Read to Self and the rest on Read to Someone, switching halfway through. Then we added our new words of the week. They are "why", "pick", "new", and "help" for grade ones, and "which", "best", "little", and "with" for grade twos. In the afternoon we started with a look at the things we had come up with last week that we know about Lola and what her needs are. Then we came up with some questions that we want to learn about her, or leopard geckos. We will be working on this for the next few weeks to develop our research skills for when we get started on our own animals. Then we talked a little about Arbor Day, as our school is part of the celebration this year, and watched the movie The Lorax. The students had lots of great ideas and questions about why trees are important. In gym, we continued our obstacle course.
Report cards have gone home today. Please sign the envelope and return it to me so that it can be used again for the report card at the end of the year.

Hello families and friends,
Today we started our day with writing about our weekends. We have really been working on adding more details into our ideas, using the word wall to help with our spelling, and remembering to put a period at the end of our work. Then after snack we got into groups and collected some snow in cups. Throughout the day we made some observations about what was happening in our cups and made labelled diagrams of what we saw. Ask your child what happened with their snow. Then in word work we did our words of the week. To fit in with our work on hot and cold temperatures, our words this week are "freeze", "melt", "water", "insulate", and "temperature". After that we worked on our Read to Self and Read to Someone skills.
In the afternoon we started with our first day of having the students do the afternoon read-aloud. We will be having a different student do this each day from Monday to Thursday so that everyone has an opportunity to read a book to the class. This should be a book that the student has read before, and is comfortable reading independently in front of the group. Then we continued looking at subtraction with a couple problems, making sure to draw out what we were doing to get our answers. In gym we started an obstacle course. Ask your child about this. We ended our day talking about what happened with the snow we had collected and some ideas for different experiments we could try.
Please make sure that your child's swimming form is returned by tomorrow. This needs to be sent to the pool in preparation for when we go swimming at the end of February so that the instructors will know which group to place each student in.
This Wednesday is Fun Lunch.
Tomorrow, we will be experimenting with some different insulators. If you have any spare materials around the house that you could donate (strips of cloth, small pieces of cardboard, styrofoam, etc.) that would be much appreciated. It does not need to be a lot, but ideally enough to wrap around a plastic cup.

Hello families and friends,
This morning we started our day with working on our Read to Self and Read to Someone skills. Then we went to the Learning Commons. A reminder that we can have these books signed out for up to two weeks before they need to be returned. In writing, we have been working on making some cards that show different characters and adjectives to help us when we are trying to think of something to write about. We also worked on our partner stories that we started yesterday. In word work we did the /ch/ and /u/ sounds. In the afternoon we did some work on Mathletics. Then we continued our look at hot and cold temperatures. In the comments below, tell me an activity you like to do outside when it is cold. In gym, we continued our gymnastics work.
A reminder that swimming forms are due back by next Monday, January 16th.
I have had a few notes mentioning that people are able to volunteer for swimming. The permission forms for swimming will go home at a later date, likely at the end of January or beginning of February, and there will be space on there for marking off which day(s) you are available to come and help out. We will be swimming at Bob Bahan Pool again this year.
